Course Description #1: Do you love sharpening instruments, or do you absolutely dread it? This course will provide comprehensive training in the proper techniques and methods essential for maintaining optimal instrument performance and reducing clinician hand fatigue. Learn the fundamentals of instrument sharpening, including understanding different blade designs, identifying dull instruments, and mastering the skills necessary for achieving consistently sharp edges through hands-on instruction. Improve efficiency and reduce procedural time through proficient instrument sharpening practices!
Course Objectives #1:
- Recognize signs of instrument dullness and implement timely sharpening protocols to maintain instrument quality.
- Identify and differentiate between various dental instruments and their specific sharpening needs.
- Apply proper sharpening techniques to achieve sharp cutting edges, enhancing clinical precision and efficacy.
Course Title #2: Shake It Off: Ergonomics to Keep You Pain-Free and Performing at Your Best
Dental professionals often face physical strain from repetitive motions and awkward postures, leading to discomfort, injury, and reduced career longevity. In this interactive course, participants will explore the importance of ergonomics, practical stretching techniques, and self-care throughout the workday to enhance workplace comfort and reduce the risk of musculoskeletal disorders. Small adjustments to daily routines, even when not in the office, can have a big impact!
Course Objectives #2:
- Recognize the common ergonomic challenges in dental practice that contribute to musculoskeletal strain and injury.
- Learn strategies to create a more ergonomically friendly workspace, including proper chair positioning, patient seating, and instrument handling.
- Discover targeted stretches and exercises to reduce tension, improve flexibility, and prevent injury during the workday.
- Understand how applying ergonomic principles and daily moments of self-care can promote physical and mental well-being.
Meet the Instructor: L. Whitney Howerton, MDH, RDH, CDIPC
L. Whitney Howerton, MDH, RDH, CDIPC, is a clinician, educator, international speaker and the senior manager of clinical education and innovation for Paradise Dental Technology. Whitney has shown her dedication to the dental hygiene profession through multiple leadership roles on a local, state, and national level. With experience as a full-time clinical and didactic instructor teaching a wide variety of courses including local anesthesia, head, neck and dental anatomy, special patient care, and advanced instrumentation, Whitney loves educating
students and colleagues alike. In addition to her role at PDT, she currently serves as adjunct faculty in the dental hygiene department at the University of Tennessee and practices clinically for a general dentist. She has built robust clinical education programs for both dental manufacturers and comprehensive healthcare centers focusing on the importance of improved patient outcomes and providing safe, quality care. In her free time, Whitney enjoys cooking, traveling, and getting lost in a great book.
