MORNING COURSE TITLE #1: Opioid and Pharmacology Update for Todays Dental Practice

Morning Course Description #1:

Daily, pharmaceuticals impact general practices and dental care. Learning to evaluate new drugs and the potential effects on patients and dental practices is essential for protection for all. This course will offer some of the required MATE training credits (2) for DEA renewal.

Morning Course Objectives #1:

  • Recognize drugs new and established, that impacts dental care.
  • Develop strategies for managing patients related to their opioid use.
  • Review analgesics, antibiotics and opioid alternatives that are most appropriate for dental practices.
  • Review rational and use of opioids in dental practices.

Meet the Instructor: Dr. Michael E. Pruett

Dr. Pruett serves as an Assistant Professor in the Department of General Dentistry while the Director of Continuing Education for the Dental College of Georgia.  Prior to this, he served as Director of the General Practice Residency Program at The Dental College of Georgia for 21 years. He received his DMD from the Medical College of Georgia School of Dentistry, and then completed a two-year General Practice Residency at the University of Virginia. Dr. Pruett has placed and restored dental implants for the last 31 years and maintains an active practice within the Dental College of Georgia. Dr. Pruett lectures nationally and internationally on a variety of topics.

MORNING COURSE TITLE #2: “What would you do?” An Interactive Ethics Workshop

Morning Course Description #2: Take a fresh look at how to approach everyday ethical scenarios!  This course will cover a new approach to working our way through ethical situations that may present themselves in our practice settings.  Audience members will actively participate in the discussion as well as bring up scenarios of their own for the group to work through.

Morning Course Objectives #2:

  • Review and rethink traditional approaches to ethical scenarios.
  • Discuss unique ethical scenarios common to practice settings.
  • Participate in open dialogue about scenarios from their specific practices.

Meet the Instructor: Dr. Rhoda J. Sword, Professor, The Dental College of Georgia at Augusta University

Dr. Sword is a Professor in the Department of Restorative Sciences at The Dental College of GA at Augusta University. Prior to accepting to accepting a full-time faculty appointment in 2008, she practiced General Dentistry for 6 years in Evans, GA. She teaches preclinical and clinical dentistry in the areas of occlusion, treatment planning and operative dentistry while maintaining a limited faculty practice in restorative dentistry. Dr. Sword is a fellow in ACD and is very active in the EDDS and the GDA. She is currently an ADA delegate and is on the ADA Council for Membership.

AFTERNOON COURSE TITLE: Technologies that Change Your Practice

Afternoon Course Description: Learn about many technologies and strategies that can improve your efficiency and patient care.  Topics covered include digital impressions, 3D milling, lasers, and many others.  This fun and fast paced lecture will give you tons of info no matter where you are on the “techno-curve” in an entertaining and fun format. Dr. Flucke constantly evaluates new products to find the latest and greatest products and devices… so you don’t have to! Spend some time with dentistry’s “Technology Evangelist” and leave with a list of new and exciting ways to improve patient care and office efficiency the very next day.

Meet the Instructor: Dr. John C. Flucke DDS

Dr. John Flucke is in private practice at Lee’s Summit, Missouri where he has direct patient care.  He serves as Technology Editor for Dental Products Report magazine as well as Chief Dental Editor where he writes, edits, and does video demos of products featured in his “Technology Evangelist’ columns. Dr. Flucke has one of the most popular dental blogs on the Internet “Ramblings of Dentistry’s Technology Evangelist ” featuring daily updates on technology in healthcare and technology in general.  The site has over 2 million unique page views.

He consults with manufacturers helping with development of techniques, technologies, and products which allows him to see things from the “duct tape and zip tie stage” all the way through to the completed item. He lectures extensively on all aspects of clinical dentistry as well as technology in dentistry. He has been featured at every major dental meeting in the U.S. and internationally. Dr. Flucke is the past president of the Greater Kansas City Dental Society as well as serving as the Missouri State Peer Review Chairman.
